Rum Village is the original NIMBA trail with over 40 acres of old school tight singletrack located on the south side of South Bend. This well loved trail is popular for week day rides & weekend laps.
The trail consists of three interconnected segments, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The beginner trail 1995 is approximately 1 mile long, the intermediate trail The Zoo adds another 2 miles and the advanced Junkyard Dog is another 3 miles.
Each section has an exit that will take you back to the Kiosk. Hills become steeper and longer as you move up the skill level. The more challenging features have bypasses.
Tips: There is a tabletop towards the end of The Zoo (intermediate trail) at the bottom of the downhill run. Send it!
Skills Area: In October 2023, NIMBA started the initial stages of Hank's Playground, a skills area near the trail kiosk. Three new wooden pier drops have been constructed; a beginner, intermediate, and expert drop.
In 2024, two wooden teeter-totters (seesaws) were also added to the skills area. One of the teeter-totters drops down onto a wooden roll down, which then leads to a dirt tabletop jump and a dirt berm.
More features will be added in 2025.
Trail History: The beginner trail is named 1995 based off the year NIMBA was originally formed. The Zoo is a nod to the Rum Village Zoo known as Storyland Zoo that existed from 1957 to 1981 at the park across the street. Junkard Dog is named after Rum's location to a junkyard and the ferocity of the trail's descents & climbs.
Michiana resident Tyler, aka The Michiana Madman, created his YouTube channel to help answer any questions a beginner mountain biker may have when they first start mountain biking.
The focus of his channel is to showcase the MTB trails in the Midwest region but also other parts of the country as well. How-to and DIY tutorials are sometimes posted as well as Product Reviews.
We here at NIMBA are thankful for all the videos he has created showcasing our trails.
